Limit notation for a horizontal asymptote tells you what the graph of the polynomial is doing. If the asymptote is y=0, that means that the degree on the denominator is large than the top. This makes the denominator larger and larger as it approaches positive infinity or negative infinity, getting closer but never actually touching the asymptotes. Even if the equation is y=# the graph will only go towards the middle; it does not touch the asymptotes either.
Limit notation is written:

(∞ means to the right of the asymptote)
as x--> -∞, f(x)--> #
(-∞ means to the left of the asymptote)
